Review: Motorola RIZR Z8

Motorola RIZR Z8
Motorola RIZR Z8

The Motorola RIZR Z8 has similar features to that of the brick like Nokia N73, although barely any chunkier than the original RAZR phone. It does take the ultra-thin phone on to the higher end spectrum of the 3G Smart-phones. This is Motorola’s first Symbian mobile phone sine 2005, and is the most highly power-driven phone, currently existing of it’s range.

The Z8 is an improvement of the RIZR Z3 phone being a slim slider. At just 15mm thin it is a little slimmer than the Z3, but is longer and wider . The Z8 has fascinating twist to it’s design. The phone is an unusual shape, it is slightly angled at the rear edge when opened, giving the phone a clamshell appearance. The bright TFT display screen is fantastic and has an astounding 16 million colours and one of the highest resolutions on the market. The screen is a nice size also, and is 2.2 inches across. The keypad works well but can be restrictive and cause problems if you have large fingers.

The Z8 is a 3G phone and has high-speed HSPDA data speed of 3.6 Mbps. This makes downloading music, video and emailing at broadband speeds possible. High quality video calling is also possible, using VGA-resolution and a second camera managing 30 frames per-second makes for an excellent video calling experience. The camera is of 2 mega-pixels and a high resolution s provided for still photography and does have a flash. The camera cannot contend with the Nokia N73 or Sony-Ericsson-K810i which both have auto-focus and the Z8 is a fixed focused camera.

The Z8 is also equipped with a music player and supports the formats of an MP3, AAC, AAC+ and AAC enhanced for a high quality stereo. The player can synchronise with a PC via high speed Bluetooth or USB 2.0. It can handle play-lists and shuffles the music. Support for a Bluetooth stereo headset is provided, but is not supplied with the phone. However, the phone is supplied with a MicroSD memory card containing a great film The Bourne Identity, and video playback is also supported. The built in memory of the Z8 is 80-Mbytes, but does have support for memory cards with up to 4-Gbytes capacity, which is fantastic.

The Z8 is potentially like a mini lap-top rather than a phone, this is because there is a third party of applications available at is a Symbian phone. Symbian systems do have a lack of speed, ease and strength of a simple mobile interface. The Z8 does reveal predictable problems such as; the phone just closing down or freezing up and the menus being very slow. The battery life of the Z8 is not very good what so ever. It is known that Motorola’s are very taxing to use than other brands of phones. Just be ready to consult the user guide quite a-lot of the time.

You will have to gear yourself up to spend some time educating yourself with how to use this phone. And that it isn’t 100% robust. The most comparable phone out there to the Z8 is the Nokia E75. The budget version of the Z8 is the Motorola RIZR Z3 as it lacks the 3G and Smart-phone capabilities. The Motorola MAXX V6 does have many similarities to the Z8 but just isn’t a Smart-phone. The Z8 is the best Motorola phone currently available, but it does demand more from the user as it is a 3G Symbian phone, than any other normal handset.
