Nokia 5230 review

Nokia 5230 review

The lower segment of the mobile phone market has become lucrative with the arrival of Nokia 5230. The common run mobile phones within this segment will get a run for their money as Nokia 5230 has arrived with its efficient smart phone features. Prior to this handset, hardly any other touch screen mobile phones have ventured into this arena. The combination of full touch screen functionalities and excellent affordability is the biggest USP of Nokia 5230 and the users are very happy to grab it with both hands. The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic created a good impact, and it is very well carried forward by the 5230. In terms of looks, the handset looks much closer to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. However, the exceptions include different colour panels, Wi Fi and a lower mega pixel camera. Nokia 5230 runs on the 5th edition of the Symbian S60 operating system and it includes flip scrolling. This scrolling user interface allows the users to slide and press on the screen, which is the kinetic scrolling functionality. This user interface definitely adds a new dimension to the touch screen functionalities of the handset. Nokia 5230 is available in the market since August, 2009, and it is doing quite a good business.

Let’s take a look at the detailed description of the features and the specification of Nokia 5230

Nokia 5230 Review – network and connectivity

No matter with what features a mobile phone comes loaded with, the basic network connectivity feature must be good. If a handset fails to support good network coverage, then the basic purpose of establishing communication will get affected, which is the last thing that any mobile phone company would like happen. Therefore, let’s find out what Nokia 5230 has to offer in terms of network coverage. The handset will support the 2G and the 3G network carriers. In case of the 2G network, it will support quad band GSM 850/ 900/ 1800/ 190; while in case of 3G, it supports the dual band HSDPA 900/ 2100. After the network, let’s find out about the data transfer and connectivity options of the handset.

Unlike the other 3G mobile phones that provide fast browsing speed of 7.2 Mbps, the Nokia 5230 only comes with 3.6 Mbps HSDPA speed. In addition to that, there are Class 32 GPRS and EDGE, but there is no Wi Fi. The users can transfer data by using data cable and connecting it with the v2.0 microUSB port. Wireless data transfer is also possible as the handset is loaded with Bluetooth® v2.0 support.

Nokia 5230 – memory

Nokia 5230 is a smart phone, and hence it must get the back up of a good memory support. These days having proper support of memory has become very crucial. Particularly, the smart phones come loaded with numerous high-end features and applications that require higher storage space. A handset might feature a fabulous music player that can play diverse files of music, but the mobile phone must feature good memory in order to store the maximum number of songs. All these aspects prove the importance of a good memory support in the smart phones. Considering this aspect, let’s check what Nokia 5230 has to offer in terms of memory. The device provides 70 MB of internal storage that is enough to store practically unlimited fields and entries of the phone book and detailed call records. In addition to the internal memory, Nokia 5230 comes with a microSD™ card slot. You can expand the memory up to 16 GB by using this card slot.

Nokia 5230 Review – looks and the display

As mentioned above, there is a striking resemblance between the Nokia 5230 and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Both the mobile phones come with TFT resistive touch screen displays of 3.2 inches with a resolution of 360 x 640 and 16 million colours. In fact, the measurements of the phones are also same- 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm, 83 cc. Nokia 5230 is available in Black and White, and it looks very attractive. The look of a mobile phone plays a vital part in attracting the buyers, especially if the handset is a touch screen device. The frontal part of the touch screen mobile phone main features the 3.2 inches display screen where the home screen icons and the widgets can be customized as per the requirements. At the bottom part of the mobile phone, exactly under the display screen, the call key, menu button, and the end key are placed. The display of the handset comes with two excellent features of proximity sensor for auto turn off and accelerometer sensor for auto rotate. Nokia 5230 weighs 115 grams, which is a bit heavier than the 109 grams weight of the 5800 XpressMusic.

Nokia 5230 – the camera

Compared to the 3.15 mega pixel camera of 5800 XpressMusic, the 2 mega pixel snapper of Nokia 5230 is a bit downer. This is probably done to keep the affordability factor of the handset. However, the camera can click images with the resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels and record videos at VGS @30 fps. There is no secondary camera in the mobile. The camera of the 5800 XpressMusic includes auto focus and Dual LED Flash as well, but these features are missing in the camera of the 5230.

Nokia 5230 – music and video playback

When it comes to mobile phone entertainment, the music player and the video play back plays a key role. There are many buyers that purchase mobile phone considering these entertainment options in mind. Moreover, these smart phones have Bluetooth® compatibility that allows the users to seamlessly transfer music and video files from/to other compatible handsets. The music player of Nokia 5230 can play MP3, WAV, ?AAC+, and WMA files while the video playback is capable of playing MP4, H.263, H.264, and WMV files.
