The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic is a music player slider phone. It does appear to be very similar to the 6111. Here’s hoping it has improved from that.
Ok, our initial impression is that it’s great to hold and is a nice, neat design. It is slightly thinner than the Nokia 6111 and also a little heavier and larger. But in our opinion this is a really nice and ideal sized phone. Many of the phones functions can be easily used without even sliding open the phone. The dedicated music keys are o the outside these are to play, forward, rewind & pause there is also a camera key. The volume keys are on the side of the phone and can be used as a zoom key also when the camera is in use. The display is marvellous and it’s obvious to see that thought has gone into the interface and it works effectively. The display is of high resolution QVGA which consists of 320 x 240 pixels with 262k colours and is a large 2 inches.
Clearly the 5300 is a music player and supports all digital music formats such as; MP3, Midi, AAC, AAC+, enhanced AAC+ and WMA, a built in FM radio is also available. There is a Nokia HS-47 headset included in with the phone. The support for a Bluetooth® headset is available. The sound quality is ok but not quite as good as the Sony Ericsson Walkman range. A memory card is supplied, and can be extended to 2Gbytes which is enough to store around 1,500 songs.
The 5300 does have other great features and functions that we are expecting from phones these days. The camera features a resolution of 1.3 mega-pixels and a video recording option is also available. The camera doesn’t have a flash and the picture quality is what you would expect for a phone in this price category. But photography isn’t really the point of this phone. The phone does have a voice recorder and supports voice commands. The internet access is fast as the phone supports EDGE and a standard web browse is supplied. Connection options include USB, Bluetooth® and infrared. A CD is supplied, this is so you can handle files and the transference of music from a PC to the phone. The battery is fairly standard and is on similar par with an iPod when playing music.
The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic is undoubtedly in competition with Sony Ericsson’s Walkman range. It is also one of Nokia’s first phones in their XpressMusic range. The Nokia 5200 is very alike to the 5300 but lacks some of it’s features. We are looking forward to Nokia releasing more phones from the XpressMusic range, but, if you do want these phones to last, you do have to look after them vigilantly as there have been some reports that the 5300 have broke very easily.
