Nokia 6212 review

The Nokia 6212 classic is an eagerly awaited addition to the Nokia Classics range. The reason for the excitement surrounding this handset is due to the new technology, Near Field Communication (NFC), incorporated within the device. With a maximum distance of 10 cm needed between compatible devices, this new application is designed for use at close range. By touching the handset to another NFC device, information and services can be accessed, content can be shared and payments can be made. The Nokia 6212 Classic is very similar in style to the Nokia 6216 Classic, the only visible difference being the colour. This solid looking mobile is black in colour with blue highlights to the key pad. Weighing in at only 88grams, this neat little candybar design handset measures 114.7mm x 47.1mm x 14.5mm. Once fully charged, a talk time of 3.4 hours and a stand by time of 300 hours can be expected. Supporting a 2 megapixel camera, mini USB port, stereo FM radio and a MicroSD™ memory card slot (up to 4GB) to name a few, this phone has lots to talk about.
Nokia 6212 Classic – Camera & Music Entertainment
For those who like to have music wherever they go, the in-built music player can store and playback tunes downloaded in the following formats; MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+ and Microsoft Windows Media Audio (WMA). A built in stereo FM radio comes accompanied by a visual radio feature. This enables the user to view information on the screen whilst enjoying their favourite FM radio station.
Although this handset comes with only a 2 megapixel camera, it is accompanied by a flash and 8 x zoom thus giving the user some tools to make the best of what they have. The full screen viewfinder allows the photographer to see the subject and then share the picture more clearly. Among other inclusions is a devoted camera key and Landscape mode.
A second camera, located on the front of the handset, supports 3G video calling enabling face to face communication with contacts that have compatible devices. The main camera also allows video recording which can then be stored, edited and replayed on the 2” QVGA 240 x 320 display supporting up to 16 million colours. These videos and pictures can also be shared using your choice of NFC, Bluetooth, MMS or email.
Nokia 6212 Classic Review – New Technology
For the most up to date technology in a mobile phone, Near Field Communication is it. NFC is a way of exchanging information between your phone and a compatible device by simply touching them together or waving your phone in front of it. Compatible devices include NFC credit card reader, NFC ticket gate or a small object called an RFID tag. This means that the user of an NFC-enabled handset has the option to use it as an alternative to a credit card or travel card. Information can be gained or shared by touching the phone to an RFID tag embedded in a “smart” poster or another compatible device. Swap information, contact details even business cards with just the touch of your phones. Pay for travel, get timetable information or buy your morning paper with a simple swipe or touch. Future possibilities for this technology include identity documents, airline tickets and electronic keys for cars, hotels and offices.
Nokia 6212 Classic – Internet & Messaging Services
Connection to the internet is fast and available through the Nokia 6212 Classics inbuilt browsers. These include XHTML, WAP 2.0 and Opera mini browser. Internet and data transfers are supported by 3G, GPRS and EDGE technologies as well as Bluetooth® and NFC with its ability to read, write and share information. Connection to a PC is also available via the mini USB port.
Along with the Nokia Xpress Audio messaging, allowing the user to record and send audio recordings to compatible devices, this phone also supports SMS and MMS 1.2 for text, picture and video messaging. The Nokia 6212 Classic also includes an instant messaging service. Receiving, creating and sending emails is also possible from this mobile phone, giving the user a variety of ways to keep in touch.
Nokia 6212 Classic – Gaming & Applications
The Nokia 6212 Classic comes with a selection of pre-loaded games, supports Java™ games and also allows the user to expand their gaming choice by downloading more games. The handset includes Nokia PC Suite which allows connection of your Nokia device to your Windows PC for fast file transfer and smooth synchronisation.
Included within the Nokia 6212 classics built-in applications are Contacts, calendar, to-do list, notes, alarm clock, stop watch, countdown timer, calculator, Converter II and World Clock II. Another application included is WidSets. This is a free mobile service that pushes content from your favourite web services as soon as it is available straight to your mobile phone. It recognises updates to websites you would normally visit several times a day by using mini-applications called widgets. Get your email, read news, play games, view pictures and much more, all from your handset.
Nokia 6212 Classic Review – Summary
The Nokia 6212 Classic is very similar to a lot of mobile phones available at the moment. Many of its features and applications are the minimum we have come to expect from our mobile phones. The main thing that really sets it apart from the rest is its biggest selling point, namely the NFC feature. As this technology rolls out through more devices, and is able to be used in more commercial and service sectors, it could be that the only thing you need to carry with you will be your mobile phone.
