The Nokia E52 smartphone comes in a choice of 2 colours, metal grey or a golden colour with an aluminum finish. As you can tell from the nokia E52 specification this handset comes jam packed with gadgets, toys, widgets etc that you will surely not get bored using this handset. There is a 2.4 inch screen on the E52 which uses 16 million colours and has a resolution 320 x 240 pixels. There are two options for the home screen, business or personal mode. The E52 is fairly light as far as smart phones go weighing in less than 100 grams, the size dimensions are 116mm x 49mm x 9.9mm. The E52 battery last an average of 7 hours during talk time or up to 672 hours of standby when in GSM mode. Nokia E52 Review – Camera & imaging
Although the Nokia E52 only has a 3.2 megapixel camera Nokia definitely have not skimped when it comes to the camera features. There is a LED flash, 4 x digital zoom and auto focus to ensure you pictures are not blurred. The flash has several different modes, as well as On, Off you can also set the flash to automatic or Red Eye Reduction. Having the dedicated camera key makes you feel like you are using an ordinary digital camera and not a phone, you can take photos with one click. Some of the other nokia e52 camera features include white balance mode which can be set to sunny or cloudy, capture mode, scene mode and colour tone mode which allows you to take black and white photos if you so wish. If you have ever taken a photo then got it developed to find out if looks like a large flash then you will be interested in using the light sensitivity features. This allows you to control how much light the camera should absorb through the lenses, the setting are high, medium, low and automatic. The camera on the nokia e52 also allows you to film video up to 15 frames per second. You can zoom in 4x with the video zoom plus there is a scene mode similar to the camera features which lets you set the lighting conditions you are taking the video in. If you are not sure which mode to use you could just select automatic and let the camera decide. The majority of video playback modes are supported enabling you to watch videos in MP4, RealVideo and WMV, see the E52 specification below for a full list. Video can be watch back on the E52 screen in landscape mode or you can stream video down from the internet and watch it in the same way. The Nokia E52 has a second camera which faces the front, this is ideal for undertaking video calls.
Nokia E52 Review – Entertainment & Messaging
The Nokia E52 is so jammed packed with applications it is difficult to know where to start. If you enjoy playing games on your mobile phone you will be pleased to hear that N gage applications are supported on the Nokia E52, nokia even include Block Cascade and Solitaire to get you started. Once you get bored of these you can always download more but check the costings first. Other applications that stand out include Nokia Maps Application and a GPS Navigation with Compass ensuring you should never get lost as long as your battery does not flat! This can be used with the GPRS receiver which is built-in to the Nokia E52 to provide satellite navigation. Other features on the Nokia E52 include contacts with images, Clock, Alarm, currency convertor, active notes and reminder, for a full list of the Nokia E52 applications checkout the specification below.
As you would expect from any smartphone there are several different ways to send messages on the E52. As well as sending text(SMS) and multimedia(MMS) messages you can also send instant messages by using Yahoo IM or windows MSN Live. These are virtually the same to use as you would use on your home computer except they have been built with mobile devices in mind. If you usually stay in contact via email then you can also do this using POP3 & IMAP4. Emails with attachments is also possible which is very handy if you are receiving documents etc which you need to open while on the move. Some of you may find reading a text messages a pain, if you our one of these people then make use of the text to speech message reader on the E52. If you have ever had a phone which only lets you delete one message at a time you will really appreciate the multiple SMS deletion function. It may sound trivial but without it you inbox end s up with 100’s of text messages and never seems to get cleared unless your sitting on a train bored with nothing else to so.
As we are mentioning trains lets talk about the Nokia E52 media player as this can help you kill the boredom. The music player supports an array of file formats including MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA and AMR NB, although most of you will only be interested in using the most popular format, MP3. Just like your iPod® the E52 displays album art, the cover of the album. Searching you music files can be undertaken and search by Album, artist or Genre. If you would rather not search your music and can’t decide what to listen too then why not use the shuffle function which will play random tracks. The E52 has a built in equaliser if you like to play around with how your music sounds by adjusting the bass etc. It is possible to record your own voice if you like listening to yourself and the media player can be controlled via voice commands if anyone has actually managed to get them to work, I’m beginning to sound like Jeremy Clarkson! The E52 features a built-in FM radio with full RDS support enable you to see on the E52’s screen exactly what you are listening too as long as the radio station transmits this information. There are a variety of ringtones on the E52 from when you take it out of the box or you can assign one of your MP3 tracks to be the ringtone.
Nokia E52 Review – Connectivity
As we live in an always connected world now we would hope the Nokia E52 will help us do this, and it certainly does. 3G HSDPA will allow you to stay connected to the internet and should give you a high speed connection. If you are around any hot spots then it may be worth switching to WI-FI® to connect to the internet via a local area network. Connecting to other devices from the Nokia E52 is easy using Bluetooth® as along as the other devices support this technology. If you need a wired connection then consider using the USB connection, its usually as simple as plug & play and high speed which is useful if you are transferring a lot of data.
The Nokia E52 is a quad band based handset meaning it will world virtually anywhere on the globe. HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) 900 & 2100 or sometimes referred to as 3.5G are featured on the Nokia E52. If you are still confused then just think very fast internet provided there is a signal. All the websites you view on your computer, including this one should be fine to view on the Nokia E52 as HTML, XHTML & CSS web technologies are support by the on board web browsers.
Nokia E52 Summary
The Nokia E52 is a great smartphone, for sure there are better on the market but they also have a price tag to match, and we suspect the E52 will come in well under the like on the Nokia E75. Granted, the camera does not have a massive amount of megapixels, but this doesn’t mean the pictures will be bad quality as there are lots of camera features included here to ensure you pictures come out well. If you are looking for a great smartphone at a reasonable price then you should consider the Nokia E52.

Recently my beloved Nokia 6267 got stolen hier in Zürich (seems to be a rash of that of late). I had really gotten used to that unit's ease of use, and anyone who's been through this knows you're suddenly confronted with all these decisions: do I move 'up'? 'Down' (to something simpler..), to an iPhone, or one of its clones?
Well in order to try to approach the 6267's great combination of biggish screen and large keys (i.e. not designed for a 12 year old girl's fingers), I got an E52.
I'm astonished.
This phone is the worst piece of over-engineered, user-hostile piece of junk I ever saw from Nokia. Compared to the 6267 (or the 6131, 6310i. or venerable 6150...!), it's hard to believe it's a Nokia. First off, the most obvious and clear advantages of a folding phone:
1. you can get a big screen and a big keyboard into a compact package
2. both screen and keyboard are protected, by default (see below re: 'unlocking')
3. when open, earpiece and microphone are comfortably near ear &mouth, respectively..
I should say at the outset that I worked in mobile engineering (GSM &3G) for 7 years, in engineering, but also that I see a mobile telephone basically as a tool for making calls and texting, it's the mobility that attracts me, not the bells and whistles.
Most of my gripes with the E52 have to do with texting (SMS).
A BASIC, OBVIOUS FUNCTION: you can't 'use detail' on an incoming SMS, i.e. someone texts you a telephone number, you have to WRITE IT DOWN, you can't just 'use number' and call it, store it, etc. THIS IS ASTONISHINGLY STUPID. When you receive and sms, the stupid phone asks how you want to reply, instead of just defaulting to sms (the obvious and logical choice). WHY WOULD I WANT TO RESPOND BY EMAIL TO AN SMS? Maybe there's a reason, I don't know it, but the default should be...sms. DUMB. You can't delete all sms in the Inbox, you have to step through menus to mark them and then delete them. DUMB - the 6267 was super easy in that regard. While typing, you want to insert an emoticon (smiley face): THE E52 DOESN'T HAVE THEM. 'Business phone'? well, I send lots of 'business' sms, sometimes a smiley face is useful to tailor a message or adjust the tone. Not to mention private use. Not having them is a needless step backwards. DUMB. Which leads to the next issue: symbols. If I want a smiley face now,
I have to type it :-) trouble is, the symbol list - sort of a 'symbol cache' - on the E52 is DYNAMIC. So (for a simple example) if I use a divisor sign, equals, ampersand, +, *, @ and a few other symbols, the :-) are pushed off the 'cache list' and I have to - you guessed it - tap more keys to get find them &get them back. DUMB - the symbol function was great on the 6267... You trigger the camera, and there are all these %&+§$ KEYSTROKES to DO THE OBVIOUS: TAKE AND SEND THE PIC
TO SOMEONE. The reason to have a camera in a mobile phone is to make it EASY to send someone a photo of something RIGHT NOW...I don't want a Windows experience when I try to do that. Or better: a DOS experience (for those old enough to remember..) I could taylor the 6267 'top left button' to list all kinds of functions I use every day (in box, missed calls, alarm, etc) In the highly Advanced Sophisticated E52, I have to step thru stupid complex menus to find this stuff, and there's no means to set up a pre-set list similar to the 6267. And along with all this, it seems like all I do is unlock the g#dd#m keypad - the stupid thing shuts
off in SECONDS. This was something else that was great with the 6267 - you flip it open and OPEN that sms! Invariably the stupid E52 has reverted to the menu list and to answer an incoming sms, you have to 1) press the upper left-hand key, 2) press the upper right-hand key (to get the keyboard unlocked...), 3) press the sms icon (if you're lucky enough that the phone has reverted to that, else you have to tap around to it) 4) tap down to t
