Nokia E55 smartphone Review – slimmest smartphone ever!

At the annual Mobile World Congress show Nokia announced the up and coming Nokia E55 mobile phone, another addition to the E series range. Apparently the worlds smallest smart-phone. Nokia announced the release of the Nokia E75 smartphone and Nokia E52 . The Nokia E55 smartphone will come available in a range of aluminium and white coloured casings. In terms of size the E55 handset measures 116.5mm x 49mm x 9.9mm and weighs a very reasonable and respectable 98 grams. With a display screen measuring 2.4 inches using up to 16 million colours with screen resolutions of 320 x 240 pixels the user can really enjoy very clear, bright and colourful displayed images as well as the automatic display rotation feature. However, the compact QWERTY keyboard merged with the numeric keypad may take some getting used to. It remains to be seen whether this change from the conventional ABC keypad will make life any easier when using the handset. There are one-touch keys and side volume keys that are user friendly and are great short cut keys to access the features and functions. The voice command keys control virtually all of the phones applications, services and settings which is a fantastic element to the E55's character but again it remains to be seen how practical and useful this feature will be. Expected call time on the E55 mobile phone, is up to 8 hours of GSM time and up to 6 hours of W-CDMA. With a staggering stand-by time of 672 hours GSM, that's a whopping 28 days or 456 hours of W-CDMA (wideband-code division multiple access) time, these figures are very impressive if you believe nokia! In case you didn’t know W-CDMA is a 3G technology that improves data rates in the global mobile networks by utilizing CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) rather than TDMA.

Nokia E55 – Camera & Imaging

A 3.2 mega-pixel EDOF camera feature may sound a little disappointing, but what it lacks in pixels it more than makes up for in imaging abilities and capabilities. The EDOF technology improves and extends the E55 camera range. There is a 4x digital zoom feature along with an LED Flash which includes a red-eye reduction mode, with the usual dedicated camera key facility. There is a superb selection of settings which include Flash, White Balance, Capture, Scene, Light Sensitivity and Colour Tone modes enabling the user to take the very best photo on their Nokia E55 mobile phone. Other features and technologies presented on the E55 handset for imaging capabilities are an Active tool-bar, S60 Photo's application, Printing to File, USB PictBridge® printing along with network RAW and LPR.

With the VGA recording facility at 15 frames per second and the 4x digital zoom the user will love being able to record their own video footage on any occasion. There are a number of settings enabling the user to record the best footage possible which include White Balance, Scene and Colour Tone modes. The media and real player applications enable the user to watch their video footage in all its glory, the playback file formats are MP4, AVC/H.264, WMV, RV, Flash Video and H.263/3GPP. The video streaming formats are virtually the same as the playback file formats. There 7 built-in video ring-tones which enables the user to jazz up their E55 handset and the video facility provides a more personal face-to-face phone call.

Nokia E55 – Music Entertainment

If you enjoy music as a past time then you will like what the Nokia E55 mobile phone has to offer in terms of music entertainment. The music/media player presents selection of technologies which include an FM radio with RDS support, an equaliser. shuffle, stereo widening, album graphics display, selection by either album, artist or genre and a loudness On/Off. Supported music file formats are MP3 and AAC and along with the Nokia Music Store the user can choose from thousands of tunes to download onto their Nokia e55 handset. To jazz up the E55 the user can choose from a selection of ring-tones or download their favourite track or even add a video ring-tone as previously mentioned. There is only 100MB of internal memory on the Nokia E55 mobile but we believe this will not be a problem as a 2GB MicroSD™ card will also come in the box. Up to 16GB memory cards are supported by the E55.

Nokia E55 – Internet & Connectivity

Access the internet via the available HTML, XHTML, MP, WML, and CSS supported mark up languages web browsing technologies makes for speedy connections, including the supported HTTP and WAP protocols and supported TCP/IP technologies. There are so many high spec technologies supported and present on the Nokia E55 to mention but we will endeavour to mention most of them. The Nokia e55 operates on a Quad-band network which covers GSM-850/900/1800/1900 and the E55 will automatically switch between the GSM bands to find the best available network and enables the user to have full use of their handset whilst abroad. Supported Data Network technologies include GPRS class A, EGSM class A, WCDMA-900/1900/2100 or 850/1900/2100, HSDPA, HSUPA and WLAN all of which provide a speedy and superb quality of service to the user.

Nokia E55 – Messaging Services

Staying in contact with friends and family is important but we don't always have the time for long conversations, so why not keep in contact with one of the messaging services available on the Nokia E55 mobile phone. They include SMS, MMS (multi-media messaging), Text-to-Speech, Cell Broadcasting and Instant messaging which includes – Windows (MSN) Live, OMA IM, Yahoo! IM, Contacts on OVI and Presence. There is also the Emailing service which provides the user with various protocols and attachments for business or personal. These include IMAP4, Intellisync, Mail for Exchange, POP3 and SMTP. Email attachments and Lotus Notes Traveller are supported also. What a superb choice of services to get what you want to say across in no time.

Nokia E55 – Gaming & Applications

For entertainment purposes and for those dull journeys the user can keep occupied with a choice of Java MIDP 2.0 gaming options with Block Cascade and Solitaire plus with the N-Gage technology the user can really get active and enjoy the gaming experience to a different level.

Now, there is a PIM (personal information management) section which offers it users a Converter, To-do-List, E-series Calendar, reminders and Active Notes this is only to name a few. Enabling the user to stay organised and on schedule with their busy life-style.

When it comes to the applications there has been so many features and functions thrown in and most people would know what to do with, so here we will name just a few of them. There is Flash Lite 3.0, PDF Viewer, Nokia Office Tools, MOT Dictionary, ZIP Manager, Quick Office Editors and Nokia Mobile Search.

Nokia E55 Review – Summary

What we will say is the Nokia E55 looks stylish and has been built for business or personal use depending on the users individual needs but we feel this is more geared towards the business minded alike. The E55 does look like an updated Nokia E71 handset but Nokia claim the E55 is the smallest Nokia emailing device.
