Nokia N97 Review – Internet in your pocket

The Nokia N97 is the latest mobile phone in the N-series range after the previous and hugely popular Nokia N96. The Nokia n97 is 16 mm thick with size dimensions of 117.2mm x 55.3mm and weighs a heavy 150 grams, but if you read on and see what’s in this phone, you will see why! The Nokia N97 is a pure internet based mobile phone and could be considered as a PC in your pocket. The Nokia N97 features a slide out QWERTY keyboard and a touch display that tilts when slid out. The N97 looks very similar to the T-Mobile G1. To ensure you get the best possible internet experience the Nokia N97 has a massive 3.5 inch screen. There is an ‘always open’ screen which allows the user to stay permanently connected to there favourite social networking website like facebook® or any other website which you use a lot.

'Social location' is a new concept introduced by nokia and will debut on the N97. Using an intergrated compass and A-GPS the nokia n97 can understand where it is and can update social networking websites automatically with real time data. This information can be restricted via the social networking site so only your approved friends can get your location.

The screen on the Nokia N97 is truly mind blowing at a massive 3.5 inch touch screen, as far as we are aware this is the biggest screen to be developed on a mobile phone. Having such a huge screen will make using the internet on your mobile phone a pleasure instead of a pain! The N97 will also allow you to stream flash videos, play games, update blogs, chat and email. The screen is a 16:9 widescreen LCD making scrolling websites from side to side a thing of the past. For typing emails or blog make use of the full QWERTY keyboard.

Storing your media and files on the nokia N97 won’t be a problems the handset has 32GB of memory build in and supports up to a 16GB MicroSD™ card, that’s 46 GB’s in total.

The user can expect to gain up to 6.6 hours of GSM talk time on their Nokia N97 and up to 7.1 hours of GSM stand-by time or 5.3 hours of 3G talk time and 6.6 hours of 3G stand-by time. For video and music play times they are 4.5 hours of video play-back time and a massive 37 hours of music play-back time.

Nokia N97 camera

The camera on the Nokia N97 is very similar to the N96 at 5 Megapixels with Carl Zeiss optics. The camera can take pictures up to a resolution of 2595 x 1944 pixels and zoom in by 20x using the included digital zoom. I am glad to see nokia have improve the flash on the N97 to duel LED, although I think it’s about time they looked at incorporating a xenon flash. The N97 camera features autofocus to insure your pictures are not blurred, plus the flash should kick in automatically if there is poor light.

The video capture is of DVD quality and the battery will give you 1.5 days of continuous playback (according to nokia). The nokia n97 supports a variety of image formats including JPEG, JPEG2000/JP2 (better compression performance than JPEG), PNG, MBM, SVG and BMP. There is also a second camera with a resolution of 640 x 480 designed for video calling.

As well as the superb camera the Nokia N97 mobile phone allows you to film video to DVD quality and will film 30 frames per second. The resolution of the video footage depends on the format you want to record in, check the n97 specification below for further details. Software is included on the n97 handset to allow you to edit the footage to produce a more professional finish. This type of functionally will be very useful for novices but im sure the pro’s out there would still prefer to use dedicated editing software on their PC. Printing pictures from the Nokia N97 couldn’t be easier as Pictbridge™ is supported. PicBridge™ allow you to print directly to a compatible printer without the need of going via your PC. If the printer supports Bluetooth® then you can transfer the photos to your printer wirelessly, else you will have to use the included USB cable. There is a print application pre installed on the N97 to help you with printing if needed.

Nokia N97 Messaging

Keeping in contact with friends and family is a must and what better way to do is the by using one of the messaging services available on the fantastic Nokia N97 mobile phone. The messaging options include SMS, MMS (multi-media messaging), Instant messaging, Emailing with Attachments and Push Emailing with POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP file formats. The Emailing service enables the user to not only send and receive personal emails but also using the facilities for work related purposes, so in or out of the office the user can keep on top of the workload.

Nokia N97 connectivity

Nokia have gone to town to make sure you can connect the N97 in a variety of ways. As well as the usual Bluetooth®, WiFi and EDGE, nokia have included a miniUSB port, this can be used to connect your Nokia N97 smart phone to your PC and for recharging. The Bluetooth® 2.0 features A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) allows the user to listen to full stereo music via a wireless headset while EDGE aids very fast data transfer and fast downloads, up to 296 kilobytes per second. Connect to your printer, PDA, laptop and in fact any gadget that is Bluetooth® compatible from the N97. For great internet connections the Nokia N97 uses the WAP, XHTML and HTML built-in web browsing technologies to provide this service. To use your N97 mobile phone abroad the handset operates on a Quad-band network and covers GSM-850/900/1800/1900 along with WCDMA-900/1900/2100 technologies.

Nokia N97 Music Entertainment

For entertainment there is a built-in music player system on the Nokia N97 that comes with some great features. The handset supports AAC, eAAC, eAAC+, WMA and MP3 music file formats. There is an FM Radio with RDS technology plus a Music Display with a Play-list feature. The user can make their Nokia N97 sound unique with a ring-tone and choose from a selection of tones available from either the MP3 or Polyphonic ring-tone options. To make life even more easier the user can make the most of the Voice Commands and Voice Dialling features, therefore just by voice the user can dial a contact, its as simple as that.

Nokia N97 Gaming Entertainment

Keeping boredom at bay is sometimes trying but with the Nokia N97 mobile phone there is a great selection of gaming facilities available for the user to choose from. There are Java, Embedded and Downloadable games with the addition of N Gage support providing a superb gaming experience on your mobile phone. The downloadable games option enables the user to choose their own games to play and suiting more to their own individual gaming taste.

Application tools are a superb way to keep organised and are a fantastic source of help when in need of assistance. The Nokia N97 comes with a great selection of applications which include Conference Calling, Document Viewer, GPS Navigation, OS Symbian Operating System, S60 5th Edition Software, Nokia Maps with Compass and A GPS Receiver along with a whole host of other tools to make a little easier and less complicated like a Converter, Calendar and a Calculator plus many more.
