Palm has lost its reputation of churning out smart devices, but it seems that the company plans to revive its golden days with its new mobile handset called Pre. The first glimpse of Palm Pre has raised several eyebrows due to sheer astonishment. The mobile enthusiasts want to know more about the device. The operating system of this handset is entirely original and it is named webOS. The operating system is capable of doing some amazing things and hence people can now think beyond the usual capability of the mobile phones. The device is definitely interesting and hence lets find out some of the important details of this handset.
The Hardware of Palm Pre
At the time when we checked the device, it was not the final version. The design of the handset is definitely very attractive and it is for sure that you cannot take your eyes off it once you glance on it. The body of the phone is structured with lustrous plastic and a small curve is made in the back and side portions of the phone. The shape of the phone makes it easy to carry as it can be adjusted in any sorts of pocket, whether you are wearing a shirt, jeans or jacket. The curvy shape is still persistent when you slide out the phone to bring out the QWERTY keypad. The frontal part of the device is covered with 3.1 inches touch screen and it looks quite similar to HTC Touch Diamond 2 and Apple iPhone 3GS. When the phone is not slid opened, the shape is smaller than iPhone, but after sliding it appears bigger. However, it is very comfortable to hold and use. If we have to be critical, then it can be said that the plastic body or the hardware is not of good quality.
Overall, the display of the mobile phone is quite attractive as it features the rare combination of the touch screen interface and QWERTY keypad. The TFT capacitive touch screen, which is of 3.1 inches, displays 16 million colours. The resolution of the display is 320 x 480 pixels. It also features accelerometer sensor for auto rotate. The overall measurement of the phone is 100.5 x 59.5 x 16.9 mm and it weighs 133 grams. The lower frontal part of the screen is black in colour and this portion is used for navigation with finger and thumbs. In between, there is a metallic button that looks like a trackball, but it is not a trackball.
Palm Pre - Experience on the QWERTY
This handset features a QWERTY keypad that appears once the device is slide open. If you have tried your hands on Treos and Centro, you can feel the resemblance. The slider of the phone that we handled was not so smooth and we had to push a little to make it open. So, it is very unlikely, that people, who are already using top-notch smart phones like Touch Pro, Fuze, Tilt, etc, would consider switching over to Pre. Palm Pre keypad is made up of "jelly" keys as you can find in Centro and the experience of typing over it is quite good. However, one should not expect a “Bold” kind of experience.
Memory of Palm Pre
One of the most integral parts of the mobile phones is memory, especially for the smart phones. Proper memory backup is essential to run all the diverse applications and functionalities in the smooth manner. For example, your mobile handset can load lots of music files or video files only if you have a good memory backup. As Palm Pre is also a smart phone, it must come with a good memory back up, let’s find out what it has to offer. The internal memory of the handset is eight gigabytes, which is quite impressive for storing considerable amount of data. However, there is a small let down in this regard. There is no slot for expandable memory. Hence, the user needs to be satisfied with limited 8 GB memory option, which is not bad either.
The camera of Palm Pre
Another vital feature of a smart phone is the camera. Many people just buy a handset because it features a good camera. If the image quality is good, nowadays the smart phones can easily upload the shots in the social networking sites or share with friends instantly. Hence, having a nice camera in the handset definitely makes sense. Palm Pre is inclusive of a 3 mega pixel snapper that is quite competent in taking some quality shots. The camera is loaded with LED flash and enhanced fixed focus, which means good quality snaps, can be expected even in poor light conditions.
Palm Pre - network and connectivity
Both 2G and 3G networks are well supported by Palm Pre. It supports the quad band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 network and tri band HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 network. Moreover, there is Wi Fi to ensure speedy connectivity and high end internet access. The handset is equally capable in transferring data immaculately as it features USB port for direct data transfers and Bluetooth® for wireless transfer of data.
Our experience of trying Palm Pre was quite okay. One experience that must be mentioned is forwarding my mobile number by using Google Voice. I was amazed to see that all my Google and Twitter contacts were transferred in the phone quite smoothly despite of the fact that the device is not supportive to OS X Address Book. Overall, Palm Pre is quite a cool handset that can serve several purposes of the user.
