Samsung B7320 OmniaPRO review

Expert Rating:
- Windows Mobile 6.5 when released
- Large battery
- No touchscreen
The Samsung B7320 Omnia Pro could be considered the little brother of the Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO which has also just been announced as of June 2009 by Samsung. The Samsung B7300 Omnia Lite has also been released into the Omnia range at the same time. The 3G enabled B7320 weighs 102.1 grams and is 117 x 61 x 12.7mm thick. The TFT screen on the front uses 65k colours and is 2.4 inches in size. The screens resolution is 320 x 240 pixels and much like the Blackberries there is a full QWERTY keyboard on the front of the handset. The B7320 Omnia is powered by a standard Li-Ion battery which provides 288 hours on standby or up to 7 hours call time when using 3G, more if you are in 2G mode. From what we can tell this phone is the European version of the Samsung i637 Jack which is available in the states. The B7320 runs using Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard but will get updated to 6.5 as soon as it is ready. The processor powering all this is 528 MHz with 256 MB of RAM (read access memory) and 256 MB of ROM (read only memory). If you need to upgrade the memory to store your media files etc make use of a MicroSD™ card, these are supported upto 16 GB which is very respectable, although some handsets are now supporting up to 32 GB.
Samsung B7320 Omnia - Applications
As you would expect from this Blackberry type handset messaging has been thought about in the design and therefore very well supported. The B7320 Omnia Pro is integrated with MySpace and Facebook meaning updating your profile on the move is very easy. It also supported instant messaging tools like MSN, Windows Live, Yahoo! and AOL. For push email you can use the pre-installed Microsoft Outlook Mobile which works via Microsoft exchange. To ensure you can access the internet to update you social networks the B7320 supports 3.5G using HSDPA for very fast access to the web. If you are in range of a hotspot you could decide to swap to WI-FI® and connect to the internet for free. The download potential of 3.5G is 3.6 Mbps, but weather the networks supports this we would be very surprised. If you do, feel free to make a comment below and tell us about it. There is Bluetooth® v2.0 with A2DP which is great for connecting to other Bluetooth® enabled devices at short distances.
Currently there isn’t much to say about the camera apart from it is 3.15 MP with auto focus. The resolution of the pictures will be 2048x1536 pixels and it will let you film video although we don’t know how many frames per second it will support. There is a second VGA camera for video calling. GPS is built-in to the B7320 Omnia so we would be hoping for geo-tagging to be confirmed when this handset gets released. Although due to the size of the screen it will not really be big enough to replace your sat-nav.
Full HTML/xHTML web browsing is possible so you can access your favourite site like Facebook mentioned earlier. Windows Media Player 10 is onboard so as long as you add a SD card to hold your MP3’s you will be able to listen to music on the move. If you like to listen to radio then you will have to buy one as Samsung have decided to not include it on the B7320 Omnia Pro. If you are a youTube fan then get ready to view your favourite videos as the B7320 comes with Adobe Flash Lite pre-installed. Viewing documents on the move is possible by making use of Pocket Office which allows you to view and edit Word, excel and PowerPoint documents, PDF’s obviously can only be viewed.
Samsung B7320 Omnia – Summary
The Samsung B7320 Omnia is a decent smart phone but we are unsure why Samsung decided to tag the Omnia name to it which we associate with high end handsets containing massive screens and high megapixel cameras, which doesn’t really apply here. Considering the B7320 sounds fairly boring it is still a worthwhile replacement on any Blackberry as all messaging functions are full supported.
