Samsung Pixon12 M8910 review

Expert Rating:
- 12 megapixel camera
Samsung are planning to release the first 12 megapixel camera phone into the market, the Samsung Pixon12 M8910. The main competitor of the Samsung Pixon12 will be the recently announced Sony Ericsson Satio or Iduo as it was previously known. However, Samsung will beat Sony Ericsson to it by getting the Pixon12 to hit the shelves first. The Pixon12 camera phone is 108mm x 53mm x 13.8mm in size and weighs 120 grams which is up with smart phone weights, however, you are getting a 12 megapixel camera thrown in so can’t grumble too much. On the front of the Samsung M8910 there is a massive 3.1 inch AMOLED touchscreen working at a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels which is very impressive compared with other recently announced or released handsets. This resolution will ensure you screen is crystal clear to work with and the 16 million colours it uses will make sure the colour is just as good. As you can probably tell from the name of this handset the Samsung Pixon12 is an upgrade version of the previously and currently very successful Samsung M8800 Pixon.
Samsung Pixon12 M8910 Review – camera
As we have seen the main feature on the M8910 is the massive 12 MP camera. The camera has a 28mm wide lens meaning it can taking photos up to 4000 x 3000 pixels which is definitely going to give you a quality image. To ensure there is no distortion auto focus is built in. When it comes to using the Pixon12 flash you have a choice between using the on board xenon flash or Power LED flash. There is a smart Auto mode which will adjust the settings, i.e. which flash to use depending on the light conditions you are attempting to take the photo in. The built-in GPS receiver can be used to tag a GPS location to the photo, this is known as geo-tagging. To ensure the people in your photo look at their best the Pixon 12 comes with smile, face & blink detection, shame they haven’t invented drunk detection yet! If you prefer to record video then this is also possible up to 30 fps which should provide very good quality videos ready for you to upload to youtube to name and shame your friends! You can record in D1 with a resolution of 720x480 pixels. There is a secondary camera included on the Pixon12 which is mainly designed to use with Video calling.
There is only 150 MB of internal memory on board the Pixon12 however MicroSD™ cards are supported with a slot allowing you to add a further 16GB of memory to store those high resolution photos.
Samsung M8910 Pixon12 - Internet & Connectivity
The Samsung M8910 Pixon12 will allow you to easily connect straight to the internet and view HTML/XHTML web pages. To ensure the web pages are delivered as quick as possible to your Pixon12 Samsung have included 3G HSPDA and EDGE support. With roaming charges recently being reduced after pressure from Brussels this maybe something you would consider using now whilst on holiday, no problem if you decide to as the M8910 is a quad-band handset covering GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 on a 2G network (the type you will most likely use abroad) and HSDPA 900 / 2100 for 3G networks which we have here in the UK. The M8910 Pixon12 has built-in Bluetooth® v2.1 with A2DP and USB support like its older brother but Samsung have added WI-FI® support which is great for connecting to internet hotspots and keeping your own phone bill down. This is especially useful if you are using the internet on you phone whilst abroad.

Samsung M8910 Pixon12 Review – Summary
The Pixon12 will be a big hit and get a lot of attention when it gets released in June 2009 purely because of its 12 MP camera. Having WI-FI® over its older brother will make a lot of users happy. As this is not a smartphone we expect the TouchWiz uer interface to be sued with some upgrades added to increase the hype about the handset. We our expecting so great Samsung Pixon 12 contracts and hopefully it will be free, probably on an 18 month contract though.
