Samsung S5600 Review – Summary

The Samsung S5600 is a great low end touch screen phone it’s a shame there is no WI-FI but it has got most the technology and features you would expect for a low end phone. The Samsung S5600 should be available from May with a price tag of around £160 but free on contract, Samsung are also releasing the Samsung S5230 touch screen phone around the same time. So overall not a bad little touch screen phone and without all the specs known there could be some better specs on the S5600 we will just have to wait and see.

Rating: 4 out of 5.Jen rated the Samsung S5600 mobile phone 4 stars  Good mobile phone

I'd been looking at getting a new phone for quite a while, and eventually decided on this one and so far so good.

A couple of negative things about it, I think the memory in it isnt particularly good, I have a couple of songs and a couple of photos and it seems to be full now although this can be solved with a memory card.

The text facility is good however like a few other reviews say the space button and the button to turn predictive text on and off are right next to each other and I keep hitting the wrong one which is a bit of a pain.  Although in general I like the text function, I like the fact that its just a normal numerical key pad rather than the qwerty board that most touch screens have and I didnt want that.

Other positives - the battery seems pretty good, its lasted me well and ive been mucking about with it quite a bit.
Screen is pretty clear and photos come out well on it.  Camera is pretty good, 3mp which is same as my old phone but this is much better than my old one.
Touch screen is pretty responsive.  Its easy without being too sensitive.  And easy to use internet on it too.

I think its a good phone for the money and would recommend it :)

It’s time to upgrade for me and now that is seems that the time has come around so quickly, the next step in mobile technology is the touch screen, the biggest innovation in mobile technology in the last few years. Or is it the Blackberry? We all know that the function of the mobile phone is catering more and more towards the social networking scene of today. However, in regards to usefulness in day to day life, the BB is the frontier in the world of email and therefore business and I personally believe that when the BB develops the Touch screen that they will take the market share alongside Apple.
I have just upgraded my mobile plan with Orange and wanted the Nokia 5800 in black as I have used that phone before and I felt comfortable with it. They were out of stock at the time of my upgrade so I had to opt for another phone. Still in the 7 day 'return if you’re not happy period.' At first I didn't like it...But, is that still the case?... I might have to update you if I decide to keep it.
The Samsung GT-S5600 handset is the general good all-rounder in my mind. It seems to perform well in some aspects and has failings in others. I haven’t yet delved into the email feature as yet however, the sms system is quite good and the email will be based around that.

*** For all of you trying to find the cursor keys***

- When typing a new message your text will appear in the white Textbox at the top of the phone (if you are holding it portrait, left if you are holding it Landscape).
- if you touch and hold the textbox anywhere the phone will recognise in about 1 second and then let go and it will reveal the SMALL! cursors just above the number keys. I hope that helps everyone finding it difficult to locate.
- Personally I find this feature pointless! I found it much easier to exit the text editor and view the text as a whole before you send it on. The text editor is just too small; however, you can scroll up and down like using any of the menus.

Messaging and emailing can sometimes be a chore (See the tip to better texting below). A personal gripe, and one felt by a few others on this forum, is the location of the T9 button in the text editing screen. I found myself continually hitting it by mistake. I personally would recommend this phone to ladies with smaller fingers; however, the phone will not work well with those with fake nails! Guys, the touch screen is really really good but you leave the texting experience feeling like you might have texted that message to your loved one or the boss just that little bit quicker if you had not made all those mistakes and turned off the T9 that much with your cumbersome thumbs that seem too “mash the keypad.”
The messaging menu and Inbox is very clear and well organised. Whilst in the SMS Inbox you can easily swap back and forth from Email Inbox, Drafts and Outbox which can be painful on some other phones but not here, rather well thought out.
One of the spec downfalls of this phone is that you can’t change the text input method. Most touch screen phones on similar contracts will now offer the standard text-numeric keypad, a full QWERTY keyboard and then a scribble box thing that always seems a novelty. You also can’t calibrate the touch on the screen. You are left to “mashing the keypad” until you get used to it, unlike its bigger brother the Samsung S8000 Jet which has all other the previously mentioned features!
Texting on nokia's touch screens seems far better and a more accurate. However, those are the negatives. The phone is very very clean, crisp and clear and I find it better than nokia's for example the 5800 in regards to readability. It’s very legible and has several pleasant fonts to choose from. They change everything on the phone including the internet browsing. Pretty cool!
Overall the texting is ok but could be better.
A tip to better texting:
- if having previous experience texting on a Nokia... yo

I had my S5600 for two days before I plucked up courage to actually try to use it as I was rather intimidated by the touch screen never having used one before! I finally got around to it today + already I am more than impressed. The response speed is excellent. It is a bit sensitive but not so much to cause a problem and I'm finding that I am having to text with my little finger instead of my thumb so as to not hit the wrong letters but again it is not a problem as the phone more than makes up for it.
I really appreciated the tip on finding the curser buttons when texting, I would never have found it on my own!!

I have had this phone for 3 days now and I love it! Its a great phone and has some clever options. The most annoying part is the T9 and the space button being so close together for texting, but you can definitely get over that small problem. I have it in pink and its just yummy. Anybody worked out how to get full pictures up as wallpaper, instead of zooming in??? Overall a great touchscreen phone. A thumbs up from me.

I had never before used a touchscreen phone and was decidedly doubtful about trying this one out...especially since I am over 50, female, and not really in touch with latest technology such as ipods etc.  However, I am so glad I gave it a go - I am just in love with it!  The interface is brilliantly designed - a true joy to use. The responsiveness is first class - sensitive and fast but not too much to be a nuisance.  It is so quick to use - once you get used to it - and I am one who does like quick! I love the flowing nature of the screen changes, and the pleasing keypad tones.  Ringtones are not great - but that is trivial in my book, and doesn't concern me.  The battery life is not great but again that doesn't concern me (having had the Nokia 6500 slide I am used to poor battery life!) as the actual usage of the phone is so efficient and pleasing.  Love the fat (ie wide) screen too as my eyesight is not great.  The handset  is quite lightweight to use, and slim, and I would have preferred a chunkier phone which would have felt better in the hand, especially when holding the phone to your ear for calls - again though, not a problem as you do get used to a different feel of phone.  All in all, I love this phone and definitely wouldn't swop it for anything of similar cost.  I have had a Samsung phone before and think Samsung are miles ahead in terms of user interface and user friendliness.  A truly excellent touchscreen phone and this one has gained itself a dedicated follower!

Had this phone for about two months, and It is by far the worst phone I have ever had. I've always had Samsungs, but what have they done??? It's so slow to respond, you press on an option, then wait a few seconds for it to actually do something.
And... Has anyone found out how you answer a call. It seems to have a mind of its own on that one, and answers when it feels like it.
I did email Samsung, but guess what...they didn't get back to me and I still can't answer calls, let alone reject any.
Just glad it's on a short contract, and don't think I'll get a touch phone again. I just want a phone to behave like a phone. I might even have to go back to using my old one again.

Don't get it!

There is a left-right cursor - it is just well hidden. I came across it by chance.
Just hold your thumb in the space just below the message for a second or 2 and then release it and the left/right/up and down arrows will appear.

there is no right-left cursor, you just have to touch the word u want to change/correct and the cursor moves up there.

Had my white S5600 a few days, I love it but dont love the photo gallery which is movement sensored and way too sensitive -flicks through them like its having some sort of fit!
Also, the T9 button and space button are too close together and keep turning predictive off when i go to put a space in texts.
These are only small things that can easily be lived with, generally pretty and quirky :-)

Quite possibly the worst mp3/wma playback I've ever had from a phone. Good bass, nice treble, but the middle's gone missing.

In some 60s and 70s mono recordings (beatles, cream, the sweet) all you get are vocals.

In newer stuff it's tinny as hell.

And the touchscreen unlocking... too sensitive.

I have this in white from Orange.  I love the styling of the unit and it is very comfortable to hold.  I was a little afraid of touch-screen but am getting used to it quickly.  After just 3 days I find it fairly user-friendly to navigate all the features.  One annoyance I have found so far is no left-right cursor to navigate through text messages I am composing....am I missing something?  This is frustrating when you are texting hastily and have made a mistake.  Otherwise very happy.
