The Samsung U600 is a replacement for the hugely popular Samsung D900 ultra-slim slide phone. It is the first of the second generation phones to hit the market. It’s even thinner than the D900 at just 10.9 mm thick, making it the slimmest phone available, knocking the Samsung E840 of the top spot! The Samsung U600 has also lost a few pounds by shredding 10 grams over its predecessor, the D900.
Samsung have undertaken a makeover on the case on the U600 to differentiate from the D900, in terms of looks. One important change is the external buttons which have now been made touch sensitive like the Samsung E900. Having touch sensitive buttons are pretty cool but not everyone gets on with them, finding them too sensitive or small for their fingers. Samsung could have alienated a number of users who may decide to stick to the safer D900 or newer Samsung G600.
Not a lot has changed inside the phone. It now boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera, up from 3.0. User memory has been reduced slightly from 70 Mbytes to 60 Mbytes. The battery is less powerful than the D900's, but Samsung claim that battery performance has actually been improved due to a new technology called OPUS (Optimized Power Usage Solution). In our experience, the battery life is only 2-3 days.
Camera
The camera is one of Samsung’s best yet, with a 3.2 megapixel resolution, autofocus, LED flash and digital zoom. It is no way near the quality of the Sony Ericsson K800i or the N95, but here at mobilefonereviews we still rate it up there with some of the best camera phones available. If we had to complain about the camera it would be the speed on taking photos, with a one or two seconds delay. The video camera is fairly good to, with a high resolution screen with 262,144 colours making viewing a pleasure.
Music player
The music player supports ACC, ACC+, e-ACC+ and MP3 formats. Supplied with the handset by Samsung are stereo headset or a wireless Bluetooth® headset. The built in loudspeaker featuring a Bang & Olufsen power amplifier allows you too listenj to music without using a headset. Playlists functionality is provided storing up to 30 songs. Internal memory is only 60 Mbytes so you will needa Micro SD card to use the U600 as a music player. A 2GB card will cost around £20 and store around 400 tracks. A PC data link cable is provided with the Samsung U600 for transferring music to your phone from your PC.
Summary
Most of all, the U600 works as a lightweight, ultra-slim, look-at-me, sexy-slider kind of phone. It's got the 3 megapixel camera and the music player to back up the looks too. The touch-sensitive buttons are not as user friendly as they could have been. The replacement phone for the U600 is the G600 which is a top class phone, which has a 5 megapixel camera and no touch-sensitive buttons.
