The Sony Ericsson K800i is a fantastic Cyber-Shot camera phone and is also the first 3G phone in the Sony Ericsson range of camera phones. Thus far, this is the best Cyber-Shot phone on the market so far with the added bonus that it also has the best camera available in the UK at the time of being released onto the market.
The K800i is a solidly built phone, ok, it maybe a little brick-like and traditional but very well constructed and finished off quite nicely and should last very well. To look at, the K800i looks more like a camera than an actual phone. The lens on the camera has a cover that does tend to keep sliding off if it is placed in a pocket or hand-bag which can be very irritating. The keypad however is very simple to use and is nicely designed but the keys are slightly on the small side. The display screen is of excellent quality and is a large 2 inches. The phone is a little heavy but not heavy for a 3G phone weighing 115g.
The camera on the K800i is 3.2 mega-pixels and at the time of reviewing it has the highest resolution available. But what really decides on the quality of the camera is the quality of the optics, and the K800i hasn’t disappointed. Being a real digital camera it has auto-focus and features a real xenon flash. The quality of the pictures is outstanding and can compete against most dedicated digital cameras. It features picture stabilizing enabling the elimination of camera shaking. Featuring also is a new function called Best-Pic. This enables the camera to take nine photos at a time allowing you the choice to choose the best picture.
The phone also has a video camera that does make use of the picture stabilizer feature. Despite the excellent quality of the still camera the video camera is a disappointment. There is a second camera allowing 3G video calling and a video editor is also featured.
The music player is of good quality. It does feature a built in RDS FM radio and the audio quality is good but cannot be compared to that of the SE W900i. The use of a wireless headset via Bluetooth® is supported.
The K800i is a great all rounder phone. It has a cracking camera and fantastic music abilities. The 3G element enables business applications, 2 way video calling and fast video and music downloading. There is a built in web browser that displays web pages exactly how they would look on a PC. The phone supports multi-tasking allowing you to talk and use the other features and functions at the same time. The connectivity via Bluetooth® and USB is very much supported.
When it comes to the memory in the K800i it is advisable to purchase a Memory Stick Micro increasing the memory to 1 Gbyte as there isn’t one supplied in the phone package. That amount of memory will allow great storage for your music and videos. The battery life is magnificent even though it is a 3G phone. There is a variety of connection options for you to use for example; USB mass storage, Bluetooth® Fast-port and Infrared all expect WI-FI.
The K800i is a marvelous mobile phone. It’s a great all-round phone with the best camera available at the time of release. There are some things absent that we would have liked to of seen and a few things that could have been improved, to point out, there is no document viewer or built in WI-FI. The camera lens cover that falls off easily, the key-pad is a little fiddly to use and its size in general. The PC software that does come supplied with the phone proves difficult to install. Sony Ericsson should take note of this problem. In contrast to the K750i, the K800i has a considerably better camera and the built in memory is larger. The 3G capability is more superior and the screen is much better. It is very similarly compared to the W900i, apart from it being more compact the K800i isn’t as good a music player. We have presented the K800i with 5 stars, just. Now the SE K810i and the SE K850i have joined the K800i.
