The popularity of the Android™ phones is constantly increasing and the mobile phone industry is leaving no stones unturned to make the maximum utilization of this operating system. The latest to join the league is Samsung, which has announced a latest Android™ handset called I5801 Galaxy Apollo. However, it is not the first device by the company to run this operating system as Samsung i9000 Galaxy S is already creating quite a buzz in the market. Earlier, it was the Bada-powered Samsung-s8500-wave that was generating good excitement among the mobile buyers and now with the Galaxy S and Galaxy Apollo, the users have a better choice to make.
It was quite surprising to see the teaser of Samsung Galaxy Apollo on the Samsung’s UK website, as there was no official announcement by the company. However, it was even more astonishing to learn that Orange UK is going to market the device after its release, which is speculated to take place in July 2010. Samsung has not disclosed much about the features of this new kid in the block called i5801 Galaxy. As of now, we only know that the mobile phone includes excellent touch screen display and virtual QWERTY keypad along with rich social networking and multimedia experience.
Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 – design
In terms of looks, Galaxy Apollo looks different from the other versions of the Android™ smart phones by Samsung that are available in the market. It looks simple yet beautiful and with the elegant shape, it appears better than the older versions of Galaxy models (Spica I5700 and I7500). Under the 3-inch TFT capacitive touch screen display, you can find the four touch, sensitive keys and the five-directional D-pad. The curvy borders make the design even more attractive. On the side panel, there are power button, volume rocker, 3.5 mm headphone jack and port for microUSB. The major highlights of the display include multi touch input method, proximity sensor for auto turn off, and accelerometer sensor for UI auto rotate. The very beautiful Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 will be made available in two shades – black and white.
Samsung Galaxy Apollo Review – Functionality and Interface
I5801 Galaxy Apollo includes several pre-installed apps and TouchWiz 3.0 which is the customized user interface. The menu displayed on the screen-top can be used for controlling GPS, Bluetooth, Wi Fi along with accessing the unread messages and the missed calls. The home screen of the device comes with multiple pages. At the bottom of the screen, the four touch sensitive buttons can be used for accessing the phone contacts, messages, main menu and dialing menu. The main menu can be further divided into different pages. One of the best pre-installed applications of the mobile phone is Social Network Service where you can coordinate your contacts with appropriate information from different social networks. You can also update the status of your social network differently from the phone, and hence it will definitely attract many young buyers.
Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 – the network and connectivity
No matter what excellent features are loaded in a mobile phone, the efficiency of network and connectivity cannot be ignored to judge the overall performance of a device. Samsung Galaxy I5801 can support both 2G and 3G networks. The users of the 2G network will get access to the quad band GSM 850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900, while the users of 3G can enjoy the power of the dual band HSDPA 2100/ 900. The browsing speed of Internet over the mobile phone is reasonably good as the user can browse at the speed of 3.6 mbps by HSDPA connectivity. Other than that, there is a good support of Wi-Fi® 802.11 b/g/n. With the availability of Bluetooth® v3.0 and microUSB, data can be exchanged with compatible devices.
Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 Review – the memory
Galaxy Apollo is a smart phone and hence it is enriched with some excellent features. It integrates the document viewer that includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF. Other than that, there are Google applications such as Google maps, Google Search, GTalk, and Gmail along with integrated social networks and YouTube™. These entire applications require good storage capacity to function smoothly without any memory shortage. Therefore, Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 comes with a good memory support. The memory of the mobile phone can be expanded up to 32 GB by using the microSD™ card slot. At the time of purchase, 1GB of memory card will be provided to the buyers. The internal memory capacity of Galaxy Apollo is 170 MB and it is capable of storing practically unlimited phone book entries and call records.
Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 – the camera
Camera is another vital feature that any buyer takes into consideration before purchasing a mobile phone. In a feature-rich device like Galaxy Apollo I5801, it is even more essential to have a good camera option. However, the camera of the handset may not be the best among the other camera-specific mobile phones, but it definitely includes a decent one. The 3.15 mega pixel camera of the mobile phone is inclusive of auto focus, face and motion recognition and geo tagging. The resolution of the camera is 2048 x 1536 pixels. Video recording is possible at QVGA @15fps. The earlier Samsung models for the Asian and the European markets lack the customization of the camera interface, which is not the case with I5801 Galaxy Apollo. Here, you can bring in various effects, settings and scenes to give a new dimension to the images.
Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 – other multimedia features
The music player of the mobile phone is capable of playing diverse music files such as MP3/WAV/eAAC+; while the video player supports MP4/DivX/WMV/H.264/H.263.
Overall, Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 is good on entertainment and social networking functionalities. It is definitely one of the most anticipated mobile phones for the Android™ lovers.

On the whole, a good phone but I have one huge problem, texting. It was fine for the first 6 or so months then started not receiving random texts, then receiving them all at once, about 25 came through all at one time. Sometimes sends texts to the wrong people completely and sometimes not at all even though it shows it has sent. The battery life is pretty awful. This is my second phone as I stamped on the first one to get a new one as Orange wouldn't replace it, thinking it would solve the problem, no such luck, same problems, it's not the network as I live with 2 other Orange customers, they are fine and I have used my sim in another phone and it's fine, Orange refuse to accept nothing is wrong and I'm rapidly losing my patience, especially when I am paying insurance, what exactly for? Any advice would be great thanks :)

Had my Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5801 for nearly 12 months but in the last 3 months or so have been experiencing really bad problems with texting. People appear to be recieving my txts but on many occasions I don't recieve peoples txts and sometimes recieve single txt messages that friends sent up to a week ago! Sometimes it isn't ringle txt messages and they come in batches, think the most that has ever come through at 1 time was 15 and they were all txts from about a week prior to that that I didn't originally receive! I'm on Orange contract, is anyone else having this problem? Other than this problem I really quite like this phone but am going to have to exchange it if the problem carries on as its just to unreliable!

I have had this phone since Sept 2010. The problems I've found with it are that it's way too sensitive, if you put it down on a table, you can look back and it's connecting to the internet or an app.
The absolute worst thing about it is the battery life. I'm having to recharge it every single day even if I've not used it much. It will show it's got half left, then just suddenly shut down on you. None of my other phones have done this.
For texting, the keypads are way too small When we had the bad snow, I had to take my gloves off to be able to use it, not good when it's freezing. I've tried using a stylus and it won't work. And on numerous occasions it suddenly decides it's not going to send my text messages. I've never ever had a message fail to be sent before with any other phone, but this one regularly does it.

Just brought this phone a couple of days ago on Pay as you Go on 02.
I have Mixed good and bad points to it;
ranging from how quickly it became dirty so I had to buy a case for it to protect the back. I just need to get something for the front now.
It's an ok phone 2nd touch screen phone i've had (1st was an I Phone) very slow loading up when you switch it on, anoid with the 'wi-fi' settings when im in an area where I'm ment to get free internet I still get charged for it!! typing messages is a bit of a problem as the keys are so close together - looking at getting a touch pen..
For what you pay you would expect the phone to have at least a flash haha.
Apart from that haven't really had any other problems with it so far. probley last for a bit.

Battery life of this phone is non-existant. I charge it fully to 100% and within a couple of hours it's down to 70%, and that's while it's in its case, on standby, screen off, no WiFi and no GPS!!!
Also for some reason the phone turns itself off randomly. It can go days working ofine and them will turn itself off 3 or 4 time in a day, even when the battery has over 60% charge!!
Better phones out there by far. I'd avoid this one like the plague!!

Hey All,
I just wanted to Share my experiences with my samsung i5801. Before I start, I appreciate all those who reviewed this and gave a real good clear information about the handset. I am sure, People who read my review have already gone through all those reviews and have got handful of information about this handset. However, There is something I would need to share for those who are really looking to buy this phone. My overall rating for this phone would be: "Worth to cost".
Apparently there are certain lags in this phone. But that's what you can expect from a mid budget phone.
I rooted my phone and yes, the LIVE wall papers works like a charm. The 1500mh battery still proves to be good after a long data transfers and calls.
There is no confirmation on the Froyo update. I have nearly tried at least 150 to 200 applications and I have got almost everything working all the time. Sometimes I did get a force close problem because of limited hardware support. But You can still survive with it. At the same time, Its not worst.
I have not tried 3G. but, yes the missing of front panel camera may not give you the complete 3G experience.
The other good functionality i would prefer to share is customization of Menus and Home screens. Android users call them as "Home replacement applications". Launcher Pro, Live Home, ADW launcher, Helix Launcher and Panda Home are some of those Home replacement applications using which you can actually change the way the menu items are displayed. Home Launcher is a special application using which you would be able to switch between the styles. You can download all these applications for free in Android market.
Yes. Themes are well supported. But you need to install panda home, crazy home, ADW launchers to make your phone stylish. There are wide verity of free as well as paid themes are available in Android Market. You can install them directly on your mobile.
People may try appbrain.com for more information about installing applications.
The touch wiz is outstanding. Smooth scrolling offers a great experience.
3.2 MP camera is not that good. But video player is excellent. Divx and Xvid formats also supported and you could view those video formats. You do not need to install separate codec for these.
Music lovers will definitely be cherished to listen songs with 5.1 channel surround system. The music player functions little slow. But not that bad.
EDGE/Wi-fi works well. I have not had any problem with 10 Mbps wireless internet connection and the handset is good in reception. This phone surprises in receiving signals from Wi-fi hot spots.
Sumsung would have had a better option than the mirror like front panel which captures traces. Back plastic just ok.
Over all, This handset is really suitable for those who wants to experience android features as a beginner user at a limited budget. A "Good starter"
Thanks for all your time to read my review.

Pros-
Phone : Responsive touch screen, Multi touch, Upgradable to android froyo, Upto 7 user screens, 5.1 surround effect. Android : Android market
Cons-
Phone : Screen fades out in sunlight, No live wallpapers, wifi drains out battery, Some apps dont install. Android : Incorrect battery status, auto connects to gprs, installation to phone memory
I have been using this cell for a week now, so i will tell you what was my experience on using it.
Price : 12.5K with 4GB SD
First thing about the body and the looks, front has a mirror look and you can actually see yourself clearly in it many times. The front gives it a cool look. The back is a black plastic shell, which i guess can be replaced with different colored one, looks ok. Now the problem with these 2 : The front glassy panel is a fingerprint magnet, becomes messy after long use and u have to wipe it regularly. The back panel is again a magnet, but for oil. The leather case provided keeps the body clean and in a good condition.
Next about the phone : When you start it, takes a bit long to load, after all its android!. The media player wont start untill your sd card is scanned fully. Beware the phone connects to the gprs directly without asking, so keep a unlimited plan ready or use APNDroid from market to disable gprs. The ui is pretty cool, TOUCH WIZ makes it even better. You can set upto 7 home screens, amazing!. WIFI is the next great feature to be talked about. It supports 802.11 b/g/n. Even with wifi, the battery life is descent. While accessing internet the browser does not lag and provides smooth scrolling. The processor is 667Mhz which is quite good for general purpose applications, but if you are expecting to run high graphic applications like games they MAY not run so smoothly. Wifi sometimes gives problem, i got mine sorted after setting a static IP in wireless settings, else it would get stuck on 'obtaining address'. The following games are installed on my device and run smoothly : Raging thunder lite, A-tilt Labyrinth 3d, Robo defence, Mobile Andrio, spider man, Shoot U!. We hear that some applications wont run on this device because of its resolution, but the actual reason for many applications to not run on this device is that they cannot access some features and admin previledges, thats why rooting is invented. This device does not have Live wallpapers, one reason may be its gpu. Galaxy 5 has Live wallpapers, should be because of good hardware and gpu. GPS is a bit buggy or i dont know what is the real problem, it did not work sometimes so i had to restart the device. I got an application called Just Gps from the market which would show you the no. of satellites in range and to how many it has synchronised/locked. The box cover says this device has BLUETOOTH 2.1 , which i heard was 3.0.The i5801 galaxy 3 also has a proximity sensor. It has no settings anywhere, so to see it in action you need to make a call, the moment you bring the phone close to your ears the backlight is turned off and when you bring it away from the body it glows again. It also has a light sensor. These previous 2 sensors are located top left next to ear piece, look like two holes. A metal detector app is available in the market which probably uses proximity sensor to get detection levels. This device lacks a front camera else would become a complete 3g phone. The talktime is also pretty descent and doenst affect the battery much. It has a ACCELEROMETER which will auto rotate the screen for you if you rotate the device and assist you in gaming. The TOUCH SCREEN is quite sensitive, reason being its capacitive and works based on the electric charges at the tip of our body parts, so you cannot substitute your finger with a pen. Screen looks good and there is no pixelation observed, except in rare cases. It has 16M colors so screen looks lively. The only problem about its screen is that in outdoors it looks very dull if you have reduced th

Galaxy Apollo does not work on the 3G network. Every time I ring out I can hear the other end but they cannot hear me. My network refuses to acknowledge the problem because it is not a "problem recognised by Samaung" and therefore they won't replace my phone. They will replace the handset and I am now on my fourth! Same problem every time!!

As a lower cost smartphone, this is pretty good. I have bought screen covers from Amazon (for about £3) that don't quite fit the whole front, but cover the screen adequately and help reduce glare.
Camera works well ... a flash would be nice addition though?
Web access is good through Android ... costs just £20 a month through Orange on 2-year deal with 500MB internet.

I love my new phone. The only downside is the battery runs out really quickly and am constantly charging it. I got free covers with mine as an Orange customer. I have downloaded an Advanced Task Killer Ap, which saves the battery power a bit.

i've had this phone a week and so far its been great. with the android apps its a lot of fun to use and play with. the only downside is the battery running out quickly. i charged it for a couple of hours untill it was full. and after half an hour and been on facebook once, it was 3/4 full. and i'm worried that its going to get scratch, but cant find any screen covers anywhere. overall a good phone.

Have had this phone less than a week! It is hard to text quickly whilst on the move with it, as it is hard to select the right letters. I could do with some sort of pointing stick but not sure if could get one. The screen is hard to read in the daylight when I am outside. The back of the phone is a right mess already, just carrying it round in my bag. It is all scratched and worn like I've had it for years and I've only had it since last Thursday (5 days!!) Definitely needs a case to protect it. I did have my old Nokia for years and it is in far better condition than the Samsung Galaxy, my contract is for 24 months but don't think it will last that long somehow!! Don't go there

My Samsung 'button' handset no longer worked,I didn't want a touch screen but I ended up getting the Galaxy Apollo, thought it would be like my old samsung and easy to use. HOW WRONG!! had difficulty texting, kept going into wrong screens, couldn't set a calender memo without setting up a google account, just seemed like hard work to do anything simple. Even my kids (ranging from 12 years to 24) thought the phone was difficult to manouvre around. Orange shop wouldn't exchange it so I'm selling it

People I call complain they can hear a constant, loud echo when THEY talk. Orange have replaced the handset, but the second one does the same. Anyone else having the same problem???????
