RIM seems to be on the verge of introducing its latest set of handsets in the UK market. BlackBerry 7 devices are arriving from every corner as the company has announced its three latest products together. One is the BlackBerry Bold 9790 and the other two devices are BlackBerry Curve 9380 and 9350. It is speculated that all these handsets will be available on the market soon. We have got the opportunity to get hands-on experience of Bold 9790 and thus here we are featuring a review of the device.
Packaging
As far as the packaging of the phone is concerned, the device matches the sharp end of RIM’s very own blackberry bold 9900. However, the new device has lowered down its power a little bit at 1GHz. In fact, the dimension of the phone is also slimmed down to match the usual preference of the Asian and European users. When we held the device, it felt nice fitting in the palm. We have tried our hands on the keyboard as well. Before trying we thought the typing experience would not be easy because of the shortened space, but it was really surprising to see that typing was indeed faster. This is probably because of the buttons that are raised slightly. However, this is our personal preference that we liked this aspect of the keyboard, there could be some people who would prefer the opposite.
The features are quite similar in terms of operating system. In fact, there are similar features like NFC technology for small tagging. There is a chance that door unlocking and mobile payment features will also be included in the future. The overall experience of the phone in terms of usability is quite decent. As of now, no specific release date has been finalised on the handset. However, it is speculated that the handset will arrive in the market of the UK during early 2012. Though, there is no such confirmation, it is expected that the price will be similar to that of BlackBerry Bold.
Network and Connectivity
Like all the latest handsets in the block, Bold 9790 is also supportive of 2G and 3G network. The users of 2G will get the service of quad band GSM at 850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900. On the other hand, the users of the 3G network will get the support of tri band HSDPA 900/ 1700/2100. Common features related to data include GPRS and EDGE. Those who seek high speed internet access, they can get 3G connectivity and access high speed up to 7.2 Mbps. In addition, Wi-Fi® 802.11 is also there for the users who prefer Wi Fi connectivity. Other general connectivity features like Bluetooth® is available in the handset and the version of Bluetooth® is v2.1.
Design
The design of the phone is small and sweet. You will not get anything outright different from the BlackBerry handsets as it includes the same old small display screen and QWERTY keyboard. Though it is small, it is cute and stylish. The dimension of the phone is 110 x 60 x 11.4 mm and it weighs just 107 grams. With such a light weight, it is extremely easy to carry. On the back side of the phone, you will see the camera lens and flash point. In between, ‘Bold’ is written. Just under that, the logo of BlackBerry is stylishly encrypted. The dimension of the phone is slim and the chassis is lighter, which makes it quite easy to lap the whole thing up. Now, let’s take a look at the display aspects of the phone. Do not expect too much out of the display features as the makers never claimed something extraordinary. The size of the display is 2.45 inches and the resolution is 480 x 360 pixels. The type of the display is TFT capacitive touch screen with visibility of 16 million colors. Other than that you will get optical trackpad and the customary QWERTY keyboard.

Memory
Though the size of the phone is small, the storage capacity is definitely not. The phone will be used for varied purposes and it is capable of storing diverse applications. Therefore, it is important to have a decent memory capacity so that the storage requirements can be smoothly performed. RIM does not disappoint in this aspect as the internal memory of Bold 9790 is 8 GB. This is not all, as the memory capacity can be increased by using microSD™ card slot and the maximum limit of expanding the memory is 32GB. With such a decent memory capacity, the users will be able to store various types of data at great lengths.
Entertainment
Agreed that BlackBerry phones mainly belong to the serious users, but lately young generation is also showing a lot of interest in these devices. In fact, RIM has found a steady market among the youth and thus they implement some features that cater to the requirements of the youngsters. Let’s begin the entertainment aspect of the phone with its camera features. The camera of the device is a 5 mega pixel snapper that loads LED flash and auto focus along with image stabilization, face detection and geo tagging. Recording videos is possible, but the quality is not good because it is based on VGA. With the availability of the music player you can play diverse types of music files in the mobile phone. The music files that can be played include MP3/ WMA/ WAV/ eAAC+/ FLAC. You can also stream videos in the format of MP4/ H.264/ H.263/ WMV. However, there is no radio.
The combination of BlackBerry OS 7.0 and Marvel Tavor MG1 1 GHz processor seems to be good. We will have to wait and see how it fares when the phone is released.
